Surprising outcomes unfolded in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Ghana and South Africa faced unexpected defeats, while Cameroon and Senegal settled for draws away from home.

Ghana suffered a 1-0 defeat against Comoros in Group I, with Myziane Maolida’s solo effort just before half-time securing the victory.

Comoros had previously eliminated Ghana from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, repeating their success to lead Group I with six points.

In Group C, South Africa missed a chance to secure a four-point lead, falling to an unexpected defeat in Rwanda. Innocent Nshuti and Gilbert Mugisha scored for Rwanda, putting them at the top of Group C with four points. African champions Senegal drew with Sudan, sharing the top spot in Group B with four points each.

The match in Togo ended in a stalemate, with opportunities on both sides, including a scuffed chance by Chelsea forward Nicholas Jackson.

Cameroon took the lead against Libya with Olivier Ntcham’s penalty, but Abdulmunem Aleiyan equalized, maintaining Libya’s unbeaten start in Group D. Cameroon and Libya are tied on four points with Cape Verde, who won 2-0 against Eswatini.
