Gor Mahia Football Club, affectionately known as K’Ogalo, celebrated their ascent to the zenith of Kenyan football, clinching the FKF Premier League title for an unprecedented 21st time.
The festivities unfolded at the vibrant Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, where the team’s triumphant spirit was palpable.
The championship was a foregone conclusion for Gor Mahia, having secured the league crown well ahead of schedule, with four games yet to play. Their recent match against Bidco United, which concluded in a thrilling 4-3 victory, was merely a ceremonial step in their march towards glory.
The league victory saw Gor Mahia establish a comfortable eight-point lead over their nearest competitors, Tusker FC. Despite Tusker’s commendable 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz, which cemented their second-place finish with 65 points, it was not enough to challenge Gor’s dominance.
Meanwhile, Police FC managed to clinch third place by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 with Kariobangi Sharks at the Police Sacco Stadium.
Benson Omalla emerged as a key figure in Gor’s campaign, netting two goals against Bidco to bring his season total to 19 and, in doing so, secured the coveted golden boot.
Tito Okello of Police FC, Omalla’s nearest rival in the goal-scoring race, remained off the scoresheet in their Sunday match. John Mark Makwatta of Kariobangi Sharks matched Okello’s tally of 16 goals, a remarkable feat considering his mid-season transfer to the Sharks.
The match also marked a poignant farewell for Gor Mahia’s head coach, Jonathan McKinstry, who led the team for the final time before taking on his new role as the head coach of the Gambian national team.
