Jonathan McKinstry, the head coach of Gor Mahia, is set to depart Kenya following the team’s upcoming FKF Premier League match against Muhoroni Youth. This game could see Gor Mahia secure their 21st league title, a record in the competition’s history.

Post-match, McKinstry will head to Gambia to finalize his appointment as the head coach of the national team, aligning with the schedule of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Sources from Gambia indicate that McKinstry will begin his new role during the break in the FKF Cup schedule, a tournament Gor Mahia is not participating in. This period also coincides with an international break dedicated to the World Cup qualifiers.

McKinstry is expected to sign his contract and be officially introduced in Gambia. Following his commitments with the Gambian national team for the World Cup qualifiers, he plans to return to Nairobi to complete the current season with Gor Mahia before making a permanent move.

The Irish coach is taking over the Gambian national team following the departure of Belgian Tom Saintfiet, who stepped down after the Africa Cup of Nations. This role marks McKinstry’s fourth national team leadership position in Africa, having previously managed Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and Uganda.

McKinstry’s departure to Gambia is timed to follow the potential clinching of the league title by Gor Mahia, who are a mere victory away from the championship after their recent goalless draw against KCB FC.
