Gor Mahia edged out AFC Leopards 1-0 in the storied Mashemeji Derby, thanks to a first-half blunder by goalkeeper Levis Opiyo in a dramatic turn of events at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Under pressure from Austin Odhiambo and Benson Omalla, Opiyo’s attempt to play from the back was thwarted as Odhiambo deflected his pass into the net.
Despite being reduced to 10 men for the majority of the match after goalkeeper Kevin Omondi received a red card for a last-man foul, Gor Mahia held firm to secure the win. This victory allowed them to complete a season sweep over their arch-rivals and extend their lead at the top of the FKF Premier League standings by nine points.
Gor Mahia’s aggressive start nearly paid off within the first five minutes, but both Rooney Onyango and Omalla missed opportunities to score. Onyango’s initial shot was blocked, leading to a follow-up attempt by Omalla that went wide.
The Leopards’ defense was tested again when Bryson Wangai’s shot was saved by Opiyo, and Austin Odhiambo’s strike hit the post, signaling Gor Mahia’s intent to dominate.
The decisive moment came 30 minutes in when Gor’s high press forced an error from Opiyo, leading to the game’s only goal. The Leopards had a chance to capitalize when Gor’s Omondi was sent off, forcing Gor to replace outfield player Musa Masika with backup keeper Caleb Omondi.
AFC Leopards intensified their efforts in the second half, seeking to exploit their one-man advantage, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net and level the score.
