Haaland’s Sensational Brace Powers Man City Past Sparta
Erling Haaland delivered a moment of brilliance to help Manchester City maintain their unbeaten record in this season’s Champions League with a dominant 5-0 victory over Sparta Prague at the Etihad Stadium.
After being denied twice by Sparta goalkeeper Peter Vindahl, Haaland broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion in the second half.
Latching onto a cross from Savinho, the Norwegian striker executed an acrobatic backheel volley that stunned the crowd and gave City a much-needed second goal. Even Haaland appeared surprised by his incredible finish.
Phil Foden had given City an early lead with a clinical strike into the bottom corner just three minutes in, setting the stage for what looked like a comfortable win. However, Vindahl kept Sparta in the game with impressive saves, including a header from Haaland and a second potential goal from Foden. City went into the break with a narrow 1-0 lead.
Haaland’s stunning second-half goal sparked life into Pep Guardiola’s side. John Stones, who scored the winner against Wolves over the weekend, headed in City’s third with a powerful finish. Haaland then added his second of the night with a well-placed curled shot, taking his Champions League tally to 44 goals at just 24 years old.
Matheus Nunes capped off the night by converting a late penalty, scoring his first Champions League goal to seal a 5-0 victory for the hosts.
The scoreline reflected City’s dominance, as they secured their second win and extended their unbeaten run in Europe’s elite competition to a record 26 games.
Haaland, known for his striking prowess, surprised fans once again with his extraordinary first goal. Savinho’s cross was slightly behind him, but Haaland improvised with a no-look backheel volley that left spectators in awe.
“My word, what has he just done? That is an amazing goal,” remarked former England manager Glenn Hoddle on TNT Sports. Haaland’s teammate, Nunes, added, “I was speechless. To see this live, it was amazing.”
Haaland’s second goal was more routine before he was substituted late in the game, missing the chance for a hat-trick, much to his visible disappointment. Despite this, his performance solidified his place as one of the Champions League’s top scorers and key players for City.
