The national women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chinese Taipei in their opening match of the Pink Ladies Cup at the Emirhan Stadium in Turkey on Wednesday afternoon.
The Starlets fell behind early, conceding in the 18th minute after goalkeeper Annedy Kundu’s misjudged goalkick landed directly at the feet of a Taipei player in Kenya’s half, allowing the opponents to capitalize.
Despite the early setback, Coach Beldine Odemba’s side showed significant improvement in the second half. They controlled possession, displaying more cohesive passing in midfield and putting their opponents under sustained pressure.
Kenya came close to equalizing in the 56th minute when Lorna Nyabuto pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area, only to send her shot over the bar. Moments later, Fasila Adhiambo had the best chance to level the score, but she fired over the crossbar after being set up by Elizabeth Mutukiza with a pinpoint through ball in the 62nd minute.
Mutukiza herself had an opportunity to equalize 10 minutes later, but her shot also missed the target as the Starlets continued to press for a goal.
Despite Kenya’s relentless attacks, Chinese Taipei’s defense held firm, securing their fourth win in six matches.
The Starlets will now turn their focus to Saturday’s game against Russia before wrapping up the tournament against the Philippines next Wednesday.
