Dennis Oliech, one of Harambee Stars’ all-time top scorers, believes that the national team should swiftly incorporate Benson Omalla from Gor Mahia as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers commencing next month.

Oliech, who ranks second in Kenya’s top scorers list with 34 goals, has expressed the need for fresh talent like Omalla in the squad.

Oliech enjoyed a prolific career with the national team from 2002 to 2016, earning 76 caps during which he consistently displayed his striking abilities and unwavering commitment to the Kenyan cause.

His remarkable goal-scoring prowess made him a source of pride and inspiration for Kenyan football fans, solidifying his status as a legend of the game and a crucial figure in the modern history of Harambee Stars.

Oliech has emphasized the importance of Omalla learning under the leadership of Harambee Stars’ captain Michael Olunga, whose international career is approaching its twilight. “His time is fast coming to an end, and so the national team needs to bring in Omalla as quickly as possible,” Oliech remarked.

Oliech also praised Olunga’s performance in the last two international friendlies, urging fans not to be overly critical of the 29-year-old despite his recent goal drought.

He pointed out Olunga’s significant contribution to Harambee Stars and highlighted his status as one of the best players in the national team. Olunga currently holds the record for the most goals scored for Harambee Stars with 22 goals in 50 appearances.

The exclusion of Benson Omalla from the previous international friendlies sparked controversy among fans, with many questioning the selection process.

Nevertheless, Stars’ head coach, Engin Firat, defended the team selection, emphasizing that the current squad had earned their spots based on merit.

As Kenya enters the World Cup qualifiers, the team will be seeking to bolster their attacking prowess to secure their first-ever World Cup slot. The national team is placed in Group ‘F’ of the upcoming qualifiers, which will be co-hosted by three North American countries: Mexico, USA, and Canada.

In this group, Kenya will face 2015 Afcon champions Ivory Coast, Gabon, The Gambia, Burundi, and Seychelles. Harambee Stars will kick off their campaign against Gabon on November 13.
