As Kibera Starlets gear up to face Kisumu All-Starlets in the FKF Women’s Premier League this Sunday, head coach Ramadhan Vijago is exuding confidence in his team’s resilience, despite the absence of some key players due to injuries.
With an impressive start to the season, the Starlets currently lead the table, boasting 10 points from five matches, with three wins, one draw, and only a single loss. Speaking from the Ligi Dogo training camp, Vijago assured fans and analysts that his team remains focused despite the pressures that come with their top-of-the-table status.
“Training has been great despite the injuries,” Vijago shared. “We’re committed to playing our game, whether at full strength or not. Leading the league is important, but our main focus is on the targets we set for ourselves from day one.”
Looking forward to Sunday’s match, Vijago is hopeful of a victory in Kisumu and optimistic that some of the currently sidelined players might recover in time to join the squad. “We’re aiming for three points. Our goal this season is to narrow our goal deficit and make a strong run for the league title. Right now, we have 18 fit players, though three are still in recovery,” he explained.
Vijago also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the team’s sponsors and encouraged the football federation to increase support for the women’s league. He noted that the league’s progress depends on more backing and visibility.
Team captain Yvonne Idagiza echoed Vijago’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s discipline and mental fortitude. “Our training has been excellent, and we’re ready for the challenge in Kisumu,” Idagiza remarked. “The focus is on our own goals and staying composed under pressure.”
Idagiza also made a strong appeal for corporate sponsorship, urging companies to invest in women’s football. “There’s a lack of sponsorship in the women’s league,” she noted. “We encourage more corporations to step up and support the growth of women’s football in Kenya.”
With both Vijago and Idagiza setting a determined tone, fans eagerly await to see if Kibera Starlets can continue their stellar season this weekend, with sights set firmly on the league title.
