Hong Kong China Sets Sights on Victory in World Rugby U20 Trophy

The Hong Kong China U20 rugby team is gearing up for a thrilling competition in the World Rugby U20 Trophy at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.

They kicked off their Pool B tournament against Samoa U20 on Thursday, July 17th, and will conclude the preliminary matches against Kenya on July 25th.

In their opening game, the junior dragons of China faced a tough challenge against Spain in a captivating match held on Saturday, July 15th, Despite a 53-0 loss, the team remains optimistic and determined to redeem themselves in the upcoming matches.

Head Coach Logan Asplin expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, stating, “We have trained together for a week, and that has put us in a good position leading into this week and beyond. Rugby is important, but the experiences these young men gain, along with us as coaches and management during our time here, are something we are truly excited about.”

The match against Kenya promises to be a fierce battle as Hong Kong China U20 strives to regain their glory and secure a spot in the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens national team.

This return is part of World Rugby’s revamped vision to enhance the sport’s global appeal, targeting a younger audience with a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.

Asplin emphasized the significance of the tournament, saying, “This is an excellent opportunity to challenge ourselves and elevate our game.”

Captain Tyler McNutt echoed his coach’s sentiments, highlighting the team’s collective focus on not only their individual performance but also the future of Hong Kong Rugby.

Each team will compete in three pool matches before engaging in a ranking match on the final day. All matches will take place at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium. The ultimate prize for the winners is promotion to the World Rugby U20 Championship in 2024, where they will join the best international up-and-coming teams.
