Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League served up an action-packed weekend, with Shabana FC delivering a stunning 2-0 upset over league leaders Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) at Gusii Stadium on Sunday evening.
The weekend also saw Mathare United stage a spirited comeback to draw 2-2 with Bandari FC, while AFC Leopards and Sofapaka shared spoils in a Nairobi stalemate.
Shabana’s victory, courtesy of goals from Brian Michira and Austine Odongo, dealt a significant blow to KCB’s title ambitions. Coming off a 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia midweek, Coach Peter Okidi’s side maintained their momentum, with Michira pouncing on a spilled save from KCB goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo to net the opener in the 29th minute.
Odongo sealed the win in dramatic fashion during stoppage time, capitalizing on another rebound after Matthew Tegisi’s shot was blocked. This result leaves KCB reeling from their second consecutive match without a win, following a goalless draw with Sofapaka on Thursday.
Mathare United earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Bandari FC at the Ukunda Showground in Kwale. Bandari seemed poised to leapfrog KCB at the top of the table, with early goals from Shariff Majabe and Beja Nyamawi giving them a 2-0 lead by halftime.
The second half, however, belonged to Mathare. Ellie Asieche pulled one back for the Slum Boys in the 71st minute, before an unfortunate own goal by Swaleh Pamba in the 87th minute completed Mathare’s remarkable comeback. The draw keeps Bandari within striking distance of the league summit while showcasing Mathare’s resilience.
In Nairobi, AFC Leopards and Sofapaka played out a closely contested 1-1 draw at Dandora Stadium. Youngster Kelly Madada continued his fine form with a fifth-minute goal, skillfully converting a diagonal pass from Sydney Lokale.
Sofapaka found their equalizer late, with Edwin Omondi bundling in a loose ball during a chaotic goalmouth scramble in the 84th minute. The result lifts Leopards to sixth on the log with 19 points, while Sofapaka remains ninth.
At the Sportpesa Arena, Murang’a Seal clinched a narrow 1-0 victory over Posta Rangers, thanks to Humphrey Obina’s decisive goal in the 86th minute. The late strike capped a weekend filled with drama and tight finishes across the league.
