The newly crowned Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce arrived in Kenya on Tuesday, May 9, ahead of the Kip Keino Classic on Saturday, where she is the favourite in the women’s 100m.

Last year, she won the same event in Nairobi in a time of 10.67, setting a meeting record, a Kenyan all-comers’ record, and the fastest ever season opener of any 100m sprinter in history.

The Jamaican sprinter had withdrawn from the Botswana Grand Prix, where she had intended to open her season, due to family commitments.

In a video message released after she was confirmed for the event in Nairobi, Fraser-Pryce called on Kenyan fans to come out in large numbers to support her. “Last year was awesome and fantastic and all those words. The stadium was just filled with so much excitement, noise, music and the crowd was packed which was so much fun,” she said.

Fraser-Pryce is regarded as one of the greatest sprinters of all time, having won 10 world titles and three Olympic gold medals.
