Liverpool’s iconic manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he will step down from his role at the conclusion of the current season, citing a depletion of energy.
Klopp, who took charge in October 2015, was under contract until 2026. The 56-year-old guided Liverpool to significant triumphs, including the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2019-20, ending a 30-year drought.
Klopp, with his team currently topping the Premier League table, disclosed that he informed the club of his decision back in November. Despite his deep love for the club, the city, the supporters, and the team, Klopp believes that the time has come for him to make this challenging decision due to a sense of diminishing energy.
Reflecting on the accomplishments during his tenure, Klopp highlighted Liverpool’s success in securing every major honor, including the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.
“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.
“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.
The announcement comes as Liverpool remains in contention for four trophies this season, having recently reached the Carabao Cup final.
Klopp expressed gratitude for the support and respect he received from the Liverpool community and explained that after a tough season last year, he focused on helping the team recover. The decision to leave is not what he wants but is what he believes is necessary.
Klopp’s assistant managers, Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, along with elite development coach Vitor Matos, will also depart with him. Despite the impending departure, Klopp urged the team and fans to unite, face challenges together, and make the most out of the ongoing season.
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group acknowledged Klopp’s immense contribution, with president Mike Gordon describing his appointment as “one of the greatest blessings.” While the club will be saddened to lose Klopp, they fully respect his wishes and the reasons behind his decision to conclude his tenure at Liverpool after this season.
