Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT’s Finnish driver Kalle Rovanpera showcased his dominance as he clinched the WRC Safari Rally title – his second triumph in the past four editions.
Rovanpera surged ahead of Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville on the rally’s second day and maintained a commanding lead, securing his second Safari rally victory in Kenya.
The Finnish driver, who is not participating in the full season this year, rebounded from a disappointing performance in Sweden and quickly established himself as the frontrunner, amassing nearly a minute lead on the opening full day.
Hyundai’s reliability issues hampered the challenges posed by Rally Sweden winner Esappeka Lappi and teammate Ott Tanak, leaving Rovanpera with little competition.
With a lead of over two minutes at the end of day three, the 2022 WRC Safari rally champion eased off to ensure a comfortable victory.
Reflecting on his win, Rovanpera expressed his appreciation for the event’s toughness and Toyota’s historic success in Kenya. He credited his team for their support and strategic driving.
Takamoto Katsuta, from Toyota Gazoo Racing, demonstrated composure to secure his third podium finish in Kenya, claiming second place behind teammate Rovanpera.
M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Formaux continued his impressive form, securing third place in Kenya and his second WRC podium after his stellar performance in Rally Sweden.
Formaux praised his team for their flawless car performance throughout the weekend, emphasizing the importance of reliability in rallying. Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Elfyn Evans finished fourth, followed by Belgian driver Thierry Neuville in fifth position.
