Kenya Breweries Ltd (KBL) has recently disclosed a substantial sponsorship deal valued at Sh15 million to bolster the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), supporting the much-anticipated Safari Sevens and Victoria Cup rugby tournaments.
This collaboration signifies another significant chapter in Tusker’s enduring relationship with rugby, which originated in the early 1990s when Tusker Lager initially became the title sponsor for the Safari Sevens.
The Safari Sevens, returning after a hiatus since 2021, is set to enthrall fans at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds along Ngong Road, Nairobi, from November 17th to 19th. This sponsorship will not only encompass the Safari Sevens but also extend to the forthcoming Victoria Cup, scheduled for November 11 in Kisumu.
The event serves as the second leg of an exhilarating battle against Uganda, following the first leg that took place in Kampala on November 5. The tournament, absent from the rugby scene since 2019, is awaited with high anticipation.
Speaking at the sponsorship announcement at the RFUEA Grounds on Wednesday, KBL Managing Director Mark Ocitti expressed, “On behalf of KBL, we are thrilled to unveil this sponsorship for the upcoming Victoria Cup and the Safari Sevens tournaments. Our investment reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering the growth and progress of rugby in Kenya, both in the present and future.”
“We are resolute in our determination to partner with KRU to revive the Safari Sevens and elevate Kenyan rugby to its former glory. It’s more than just about sports; it’s about the pride and camaraderie that rugby brings to our nation.”
“Tusker has been a reliable partner, consistently supporting Kenyan rugby in various capacities. We deeply appreciate their continued backing,” remarked KRU chairman Sasha Mutai.
Thus far, twelve teams have confirmed their participation in the Safari 7s men’s competition. Among them are hosts Kenya presenting three sides – Shujaa, Morans, and KCB.
Other confirmed participants include Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Germany, Qatar, Samurai, Red Wailers, Apache, and Tropic 7s.
Mutai urged all rugby enthusiasts across the country to turn out in large numbers to support their favourite teams. “Together, we will create unforgettable moments,” Mutai concluded.
