KCB Announces Griffin Musila as Captain for the 2023-2024 Kenya Cup Season
KCB, the former Kenya Cup champions, have unveiled Griffin Musila as their captain for the upcoming 2023-2024 Kenya Cup season.
This decision comes following the retirement of long-serving prop Curtis Lilako, who enjoyed a remarkable 14-year career with the Thika Road-based team.
Musila, who primarily plays as a hooker, has been a vital part of the KCB squads that secured multiple Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup titles over the past six seasons. The team aims to reclaim its dominance in the 15s game after enduring two trophyless seasons.
Musila, an alumnus of Kakamega High School, boasts a remarkable rugby journey, including representing the Kenya Simbas in recent years. His leadership qualities were evident when he captained Kakamega High to victory in the national school’s 15-a-side championship back in 2011.
As KCB undergoes a transitional phase with the integration of several young talents into the squad, assistant coach Dennis Mwanja expresses confidence in the team’s ability to achieve improved results in the upcoming season.
Mwanja highlighted Musila’s experience and emphasized the role of the team’s leadership group in ensuring competitiveness and their pursuit of recapturing the Kenya Cup title.
The team commenced their training in August, with Mwanja expecting them to perform well as they gear up for the pre-season Impala Floodlits tournament starting in the middle of this month.
Mwanja pointed out the importance of preparation, explaining that it involves meticulous attention to detail, covering aspects such as scrummaging, line-outs, attack, defence, and the indispensable contribution of each player to the team’s success.
The KCB team, winners of the Floodlit tournament on a record nine occasions, with four of those victories achieved in the last four years, is determined to defend their title. The team’s previous Kenya Cup triumph came in 2021 when they defeated Kabras with a score of 28-25 at Nandi Bears.
