The Kasarani Indoor Arena is set to be the battleground for the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) leagues’ climactic play-offs today.

In the men’s league, the reigning champions Kenya Prisons are gearing up to face the General Service Unit (GSU), the former titleholders and record champions, in a match that promises to be a fierce contest for the crown.

Kenya Prisons, the current title defenders, are on a mission to avenge their regular-season defeat to GSU, who bested them 3-2. GSU, on the other hand, is determined to secure their 16th title, having ceded it to Prisons in the previous season’s play-offs. The Prisons team will be without their captain Hudson Chesoli, a key player from the Wafalme Stars, due to an injury sustained in the semi-finals against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

Despite the setback, Prisons’ head coach Dennis Mokua is optimistic about his team’s chances, stating, “The challenge is formidable, but our preparation has been thorough. We’re confident of defending our title, captain or not.”

David Kirwa, who recently took the helm of GSU following Gideon Tarus’s departure, has issued a bold statement to their adversaries, signaling GSU’s readiness to fight for the title.

The battle for third place will see KPA and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) go head-to-head in what is expected to be a closely contested playoff.

In the women’s league, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) is poised to defend their title against the formidable Kenya Prisons. After ending a 15-year title drought last year, KCB is eager to continue their winning streak in what is anticipated to be a thrilling grand finale.

Kenya Prisons, however, is a seasoned contender, having recently ousted African Club Championships bronze medalists Kenya Pipeline with a 3-1 victory in the semi-finals. KCB’s head coach Japheth Munala acknowledges the challenge posed by the experienced Prisons team, led by Josp Baraza, and stresses the importance of a flawless performance.

With key players battling injuries, including captain Edith Wisa, KCB remains hopeful for a full recovery in time for the decisive matches. The team’s resilience will be tested as they aim to navigate through these adversities and emerge victorious once again.

The third-place playoff will feature a match between the 2022 champions Kenya Pipeline and DCI, adding to the excitement of the weekend’s events.

As the volleyball community turns its attention to Kasarani, the anticipation builds for the high-stakes encounters that will determine the champions of the 2023/24 season. Every serve, every block, and every point will be crucial in the quest for volleyball supremacy.
