KCB Rugby Club beat Nakuru to secure Great Rift Rugby Cup Title

KCB Rugby Club emerged victorious in a thrilling final at the Nakuru Athletics Club, defeating Nakuru Rugby Club 24-10 to claim the 2023 Great Rift Rugby 10-aside tournament crown.

Isaac Njoroge’s outstanding performance, including two tries, alongside Festus Shiasi and Emmanuel Opondo’s contributions, proved decisive in securing the well-deserved win for the Andrew Amonde-led team.

Njoroge’s exceptional display throughout the competition earned him the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the tournament’s 30th edition.

Blak Blad secured the third-place finish, overcoming the University of Nairobi (Mean Machine) with a 17-10 victory in the playoff match.

Expressing his delight after leading the team to glory in his inaugural coaching assignment, former Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde commented, “This is an incredible achievement for us as a team. Our objective was to win the tournament, and every member of the team played their part. We are thrilled with the victory and will celebrate before focusing on preparations for the upcoming National Sevens Circuit, just around the corner.”

Amonde emphasized the importance of integrating both rookie talents such as Brian Munyali, Fidel Maina, and Gabriel Namusasi, as well as experienced players like Martin Owilah, Isaac Njoroge, and Geoffrey Okwach, which proved to be a winning formula for the bankers.

“The young players who were given the opportunity to showcase their skills in this tournament truly delivered. I am immensely proud of their performances, and I am excited to witness what the future holds for this team. Captain Martin Owilah’s leadership was also crucial as our team remained solid throughout the competition,” added Amonde.

With the championship secured, KCB Rugby Club will now shift their focus to the upcoming National Sevens Circuit, scheduled to commence on June 24 in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
