The defending champions of national chess KCB kicked off their 2023 campaign in an impressive fashion, securing four victories and a draw against Nacha Kings in the Premier League opening match at KCB Ruaraka Sports Club.

In the first game, the KCB quartet comprising Joseph Methu, Candidate Master Ben Nguku, Robert McLigeyo, and Woman Candidate Master Joyce Nyaruai emerged victorious against their respective opponents Kuguru Harisson, Nyonje Dominic, Lwanga Odongo, and Dutt Lakshita.

Former National Champion Martin Njoroge, however, was held to a draw by Candidate Master Lwanga Aguda.

McLigeyo, an up-and-coming talent, expressed the team’s high spirits and their determination to secure a fourth consecutive title.

“We have made a strong start to our campaign, and I am confident that we will maintain this momentum and clinch the trophy once again. Personally, I faced a tough opponent, but I am pleased that I managed to secure a win,” McLigeyo stated.

McLigeyo recently represented the country in the Africa Championship held in Cairo, Egypt, and believes that international tournaments provide valuable opportunities for mental and tactical growth. He aims to apply the lessons learned from the tournament to the local league, contributing to more successful outcomes for his team.

Looking ahead, KCB is set to participate in the World Teams Championship scheduled to take place in Germany in August this year.
