The 2023 African Games trials recommenced on Tuesday afternoon at Nyayo National Stadium following a standoff between the Kenya National Sports Council and athletes over the allocation of 35 slots by the former to Athletics Kenya.
The revised quota resulted in a 50 percent reduction in Kenya’s participants compared to the 2019 edition in Rabat, Morocco, limiting the country to fielding 30 athletes (16 men and 14 women) and five officials for the Games. This adjustment meant only one athlete per discipline would qualify.
However, athletes advocated for three participants per discipline to improve Kenya’s medal prospects at the upcoming games in Accra, Ghana, scheduled from Friday, March 8th, to Saturday, March 23rd. Despite unresolved grievances among many athletes, the trials resumed shortly after noon.
