Kenya Aquatics has revealed ambitious initiatives aimed at strengthening masters’ swimming programs in the country. The plan includes the organization of a national masters’ swimming championship next year and the establishment of a comprehensive database of master swimmers.
Collins Marigiri, Secretary-General of Kenya Aquatics, urged the swimming community, especially the older generation, to support this initiative, emphasizing its significance in promoting the sport.
He encouraged swimmers to return to the pool, citing upcoming local and global competition opportunities facilitated by the organized swimming federation.
Marigiri expressed satisfaction with the master swimmers’ performance at the Africa Aquatics Championships in Kigali, where athletes like Fahad Bayusuf and Nasser Motha secured medals, showcasing the country’s substantial potential in masters’ swimming.
Highlighting the immense potential for master swimmers, Marigiri emphasized that with proper preparations, Kenya could achieve success and win several medals in international competitions.
The country is actively planning to send a team to the World Masters’ Championships in Doha, Qatar, scheduled for February next year, with efforts underway to secure funding for the event.
In a related development, the Kiambu County Aquatics Association (KCAA) is set to host a masters’ gala at Potterhouse School in Runda on December 9.
Over 200 participants are expected for the one-day event, featuring cash prizes for the winners. Swimming clubs from Kisumu, Mombasa, and Kisumu are anticipated to send competitors.
