Kenya Celebrates Four Gold Medals at African Games in Accra
Kenya’s pursuit of gold at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana, was finally realized on Wednesday as Emily Ngii, Mary Moraa, Beatrice Chepkoech, and Aaron Kemei clinched four gold medals, ending the country’s wait for top honors.
The golden streak commenced with race walker sensation Emily Ngii, who triumphed in the women’s 20km race walk at the University of Ghana. Ngii clocked an impressive 1:37:34, leading the charge for Kenya’s medal tally.
World 800 meters champion Mary Moraa added to Kenya’s gold haul by securing victory in the 400m women’s final, crossing the finish line in 50.57 seconds. Moraa’s outstanding performance solidified her status as a formidable force on the track.
Not to be outdone, Beatrice Chepkoech, the world record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, dominated her event, clinching gold with a remarkable time of 9:15.61. Chepkoech’s stellar performance further bolstered Kenya’s medal count.
Aaron Kemei concluded Kenya’s golden day by triumphing in the men’s 800m final, clocking 1:45.72. Kemei’s victory showcased Kenya’s depth of talent in middle-distance running.
With these remarkable achievements, Kenya’s medal tally soared to 20, including four gold, five silver, and 11 bronze medals, reaffirming the country’s prowess in athletics.
In other sporting events, the national men’s volleyball team, Wafalme Stars, continued their impressive form by securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso, propelling them into the semifinals. Wafalme Stars will face Cameroon in the semifinals after the latter defeated Chad 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Egypt is set to face the hosts in the other semifinal clash, promising thrilling encounters as the tournament progresses.
