Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Secretary General, Wycliffe Ongori, is brimming with optimism as the national teams prepare for the African Hockey Road to Paris 2024 tournament.
The teams gained invaluable experience during the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, with Kenya’s men’s team securing a respectable fourth-place finish and the women’s team clinching third place and a well-deserved bronze medal.
Drawing on the lessons learned in Ghana, Ongori expressed confidence in a strong showing this time around. The goal is to secure podium finishes for both teams, with the women’s team aiming for at least a silver medal.
Ongori revealed that the team rosters have been narrowed down to 25 players for each gender, with final squads expected to be confirmed by mid-October.
The upcoming competition is scheduled to be held from October 29 to November 5 in Pretoria, South Africa, featuring eight men’s teams and seven women’s teams.
Leading the men’s team will be Fidhelis Kimanzi and Micheal Malungu, while Meshak Senge and Rose Mbulo will take leadership roles for the women’s team. The opening matches will pit the men’s team against Egypt and the women’s team against Zambia on the tournament’s first day.
In addition to the players, Kenya will have a strong presence among the officials for the African Road to Paris 2024.
Four Kenyan officials have been included in the list released by the Africa Hockey Federation, with roles ranging from umpire managers to technical officials and national umpires.
The list comprises a total of 35 technical panel members who will oversee the event’s proceedings.
