The Harambee Stars held their ground against Ivory Coast, resulting in a goalless draw during the fourth match day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

This commendable performance saw the Stars become the first team in Group F to secure a point against the African champions, halting their winning streak of three consecutive victories.

Despite numerous opportunities to clinch the game, the Kenyan team was unable to find the back of the net. Similarly, Ivory Coast was on the brink of victory five minutes before the final whistle, only to be denied by the crossbar following a strike from substitute Oumar Diakite.

The draw leaves Kenya in third place within the group, holding five points, while Ivory Coast advances to the top with ten points.

The Stars will reflect on three pivotal moments that could have altered the course of the match, particularly two missed opportunities in the latter half. Timothy Ouma’s hesitation in the first half and a heavy touch in the 72nd minute squandered prime scoring chances, while Michael Olunga’s efforts were thwarted by a steadfast defense and a goalkeeper who refused to yield.

Coach Engin Firat remained loyal to the lineup from the previous match against Burundi, with the exception of introducing Alphonce Omija in his debut as right back. This tactical adjustment allowed Rooney Onyango to advance further up the field, creating a solid defensive front aimed at neutralizing the threat posed by Brighton’s agile winger Simon Adingra.

The match was characterized by a scarcity of clear-cut chances, with Kenya’s only shot on target originating from an Abud Omar freekick that lacked the force to overcome the goalkeeper. Ivory Coast’s Seko Fofana twice attempted to score from distance, but his shots failed to hit the mark.

As the second half unfolded, Ivory Coast intensified their offensive efforts in an attempt to penetrate Kenya’s steadfast defense. However, Kenya’s resilience was evident as they managed to deflect a dangerous shot from Jeremy Boga, and later, narrowly escaped defeat when Diakite’s attempt ricocheted off the crossbar.

Looking ahead to the next round of matches in March, Kenya carries a renewed sense of optimism, hoping to capitalize on the confidence gained from this match to secure a victory.
