The Kenya Sevens stalwart Billy Odhiambo wraps up an illustrious 11-year career in the sport, marking his retirement with a tally of 111 tries from 68 tournaments.
Sharing his decision on his X platform, Odhiambo expressed gratitude for the support received throughout his remarkable journey.
He also conveyed his anticipation for the upcoming ventures beyond rugby. “As I celebrate my 30th birthday, I’m announcing my retirement from Rugby. I’m thankful for all the support during my 11-year career and look forward to what the future holds. Billy ‘The Kid’ Odhiambo out,” he announced.
Odhiambo’s memorable feat was his pivotal role in Kenya’s victory over favoured England at the Los Angeles Sevens in the United States two years ago. In this match, the then 28-year-old athlete secured the second try for Shujaa, displaying exceptional skill after a prompt setup by Daniel Taabu. Taabu’s quick response from a penalty tap laid the foundation for Odhiambo’s spectacular sprint to the try line.
With this score, Odhiambo etched his name in World Rugby Sevens history, joining the elite club of three other Kenyan greats who’ve achieved over 100 tries for the national team.
The trio includes siblings Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange, as well as Willy Ambaka. Injera holds the second position for most tries in the World Rugby Sevens Series with an impressive tally of 271, while Kayange and Ambaka boast equally impressive counts of 159 and 131 tries, respectively.
