In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the national men’s rugby 7s team, Shujaa, secured their place in the knockout stage of the World Rugby 7s Challenger Series Tournament by defeating Uganda 29-7 in Dubai. Nygel Amaitsa shone with a stellar performance, scoring two crucial tries to propel Shujaa to victory.
Despite Uganda’s initial response with a try from Adrian Kasito, Shujaa quickly regained control. Patrick Odongo and Festus Shiasi added to the scoreboard, contributing to a 24-7 lead.
Kevin Wekesa’s third tournament try, combined with a period of pressure on Uganda, extended Shujaa’s dominance. Coach Kevin “Bling” Wambua’s motivational team talk during halftime inspired a relentless second-half performance, ensuring Shujaa’s success.
Next, Shujaa is set to face Germany in their final Pool B encounter, aiming to maintain their momentum. Meanwhile, the Ugandan team will take on Mexico in hopes of securing their first win in the tournament.
In an earlier match, the national women’s team, the Lionesses, faced a tough challenge in their second competition match, losing 12-10 to the Czech Republic.
The Lionesses couldn’t maintain their advantage, succumbing to a revitalized Czech team regardless of a strong start with a 10-0 halftime lead, The Lionesses will look to bounce back in their final Pool B match against Mexico after defeating China 17-12 in their opening game.
