Vincent Onyala, co-captain of the Kenya Sevens team, has appealed to Shujaa fans to continue supporting the team as they strive to make a comeback to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Despite facing initial challenges during the Montevideo Challenger Series over the weekend, Shujaa exhibited resilience and secured a bronze medal with a convincing 31-12 victory over Chile. Onyala expressed satisfaction with the outcome, acknowledging the team’s progress.
“While it wasn’t the desired result, we are pleased with our performance. We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’re grateful for the bronze medal and ready to move forward. We urge our fans to grow with us as the team continues to evolve, and we appreciate their unwavering support in keeping the game alive and thriving,” Onyala stated.
Following their third-place finish in Montevideo, Shujaa currently shares the top position with Montevideo champions Uruguay, each accumulating 36 points. They are closely followed by Chile in third place and Germany securing the last playoff spot with 26 points from the first two legs of the series.
Onyala remains optimistic about the team’s prospects, aiming to secure a spot in the playoffs in Madrid and ultimately regain entry into the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series next year.
“Considering our performance and the standings, we’re confident about maintaining our top position. As we approach the final leg of the Challenger Series in Munich, Germany, scheduled for May 18-19, we are hopeful to solidify our position in the top four and secure a chance to showcase our best performance in Madrid,” Onyala expressed.
With slightly over a month until the next leg of the Challenger Series, the team looks forward to regrouping and preparing for the upcoming challenge in Munich.
