The Kenyan government has announced plans to set up a rugby training school at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, as part of its commitment to restore Shujaa’s World Rugby Sevens series status.

The Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, made the announcement during his visit to the national under-20 team at the Kasarani Stadium, who are in camp ahead of the World Rugby U20 Trophy.

Shujaa recently faced relegation from the world series, losing their core status for the first time in two decades. This demotion has led to Kenya no longer receiving funding from World Rugby and facing challenges in qualifying for the 2024 Olympics without core status.

In light of this, Namwamba encouraged the country’s young players, known as Chipu, to showcase Kenya’s competitiveness at the global level during the upcoming World Rugby U20 Trophy.

Addressing the team, Namwamba stated, “You are aware that we recently lost our status in the elite league, but we are determined to bounce right back. You guys have the opportunity to send that message to the world during this tournament.” The World Rugby U20 Trophy, taking place in Nairobi from July 15-30, will see eight teams competing at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Chipu head coach Curtis Olago assured Namwamba and the nation that the team would be prepared to deliver an impressive performance at the tournament. The players echoed Olago’s sentiments, expressing their readiness and determination to bring home the cup.

Chipu has been placed in Pool A alongside Spain, Samoa, and Hong Kong. The overall winner of the tournament will be promoted to the U20 Championship in 2024. This marks the second time Kenya is hosting the global showpiece, with the previous edition being held in 2009.
