On the final day of competition at the second Africa Beach Games in Hammamet, Tunisia, the Kenyan 3×3 basketball team is poised for a podium finish after securing a spot in the semi-finals.
The team consisting of Medina Okot, Mary Lisa Omondi, MaryAnne Nyagaki, and Margaret Nerea displayed exceptional skill and determination in the quarter-finals, securing a nerve-wracking 11-9 victory over Uganda.
Their hard-fought win sets them up for a crucial encounter against Tunisia in the semi-finals. A victory in this match guarantees them a medal, while even in the event of defeat, they will still have a chance to contend for a bronze medal in the subsequent match.
Mary Lisa, who has been a standout player for Team Kenya throughout the tournament, expressed their aspirations of claiming the gold medal.
She conveyed her delight in reaching the semi-finals and pledged that the team would give their best effort to secure a spot on the podium.
During the match against Uganda, Mary Lisa once again showcased her talent by contributing five crucial points. However, it was her teammate from Zetech University, Medina Okot, who ultimately sealed the victory. With the scores tied at 9-9 and only 4.3 seconds remaining, Okot was fouled under the rim, earning two free throws which she successfully converted.
Following the restart, the Kenyan girls faced a tense moment when Uganda’s Shakira Nanvubya drew a foul from Lisa.
Fortunately, Nanvubya missed both of her attempts from the free-throw line, preserving Kenya’s lead and securing their place in the semi-finals.
In the men’s competition, the Kenyan team finished in fifth place after defeating Benin 13-10 in the ranking match.
Although they had missed out on medal contention following a loss to neighbouring Rwanda in the quarter-finals, David Gichohi emerged as the star performer for the Kenyan team, contributing eight of the team’s 13 points.
As the Kenyan 3×3 basketball teams continue their quest for success at the Africa Beach Games, they have captured the attention and support of fans with their remarkable performances.
