Former Kenyan international Jesse Jackson Were has made a remarkable return to Zambian side Zesco United, marking his comeback two years after departing for rivals Kansanshi Dynamos.

Zesco United officially announced the signing of Were on a one-year contract. The seasoned striker, renowned for netting 100 goals during his initial spell with the nine-time Zambian champions, expressed his excitement about rejoining the club where he considers home.

Delighted to be back at Zesco, Were shared his aspirations for continued success, stating, “I am delighted to come back to Zesco. This is a place I call home, and I am looking forward to more success here. It will definitely not be the same, but I am ready to fight for a starting role and prove my worth,” as he addressed the club’s media during his unveiling in Ndola.

Having departed for Kansanshi at the commencement of the 2022 season, Were emerged as the club’s top scorer, contributing eight goals and six assists, ultimately aiding Kansanshi Dynamos to a seventh-place finish.

During his initial stint with Zesco from 2016, Were clinched four league titles, two ABSA CUP Championships, and two Charity Shield honors in a five-year tenure. He played a pivotal role in the team’s journey to the Champions League semi-finals in his debut season alongside fellow Kenyans Teddy Akumu and David Owino.

Departing in January 2022 as Zesco’s all-time leading scorer with 100 goals, Were is set to reunite with fellow Kenyan goalkeeper Ian Otieno, who has been a part of the Zesco United squad since 2020. The return of Jesse Jackson Were adds an exciting dimension to Zesco United as they aim for further success in the upcoming football season.
