Kenyan Tennis Prodigy Stacey Yego Reflects on Growth Despite ITF World Tour Exit
Stacey Yego, the rising star in Kenyan tennis, expressed pride in her journey despite exiting the ongoing International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s World Tour at Karen Country Club.
The young athlete sees a bright future ahead and remains committed to continuous hard work in her pursuit of success.
Acknowledging her youth, Yego emphasized her sense of accomplishment, stating, “I’d say I am so proud of this…I have been working hard for this. I’d say I am still young for this tournament, but I am still proud of myself that I am able to compete in this competition.”
On Tuesday’s match under the scorching sun, Yego faced a formidable opponent in Italian Matilde Mariani and suffered a 6-0, 6-2 defeat. Despite the challenging result, Yego entered the match with confidence, reflecting on her dedicated training and competitive mentality.
“The match was tough. I thought I had a chance because I have been working really hard in my training. I was just giving my best, and I went inside there with a competitive mentality. Whatever the result I got, it was fine,” she remarked.
Although the loss brought disappointment, Yego considers her participation in the two-week tournament a privilege and a valuable experience for her career. Looking ahead, she aims to engage in more competitions to enhance her skills and competitive mindset.
“It felt good to participate in the tournament, especially in the main draw. It was such a good experience for me, and I am really happy to be part of it,” Yego expressed. She recognizes the need for more matches to build experience and further develop her game.
The ongoing tournament, offering ITF and World Tennis Association (WTA) ranking points, is viewed as a crucial pathway to professional tennis.
