Kenya’s Chebet Sets World-Leading Pace at Doha Diamond League

Beatrice Chebet of Kenya set the pace at the Diamond League in Doha, Qatar, with a world-leading time of 14:26.98 in the women’s 5,000m event in a stunning display of athleticism.

Chebet, who is eyeing her first Olympic gold, outpaced her competitors, including Ethiopian runner Taye Ejgayehu, who finished second with a time of 14:29.26. Grace Nawowuna, another Kenyan in the race, secured the eighth position with a time of 15:01.10.

Chebet expressed her joy over the victory, which she believes sets a strong foundation for her Olympic aspirations in Paris later this year. “The victory in Doha was unexpected but exhilarating, and the support from Kenyan fans made it even more memorable,” she remarked. Chebet is now focused on achieving Olympic glory, stating that any medal would be a significant accomplishment.

Mary Moraa, the reigning 800m world champion, also shone brightly, clinching the Doha title with a season’s best of 1:57.91, despite challenging weather conditions.

Moraa dedicated her win to the Kenyan fans and emphasized the motivational boost she receives from competing before a home crowd. She is now preparing for her next challenge at the Diamond League in Eugene, USA.

The men’s 1500m race was a showcase of Kenyan dominance, with Brian Komen leading the pack with a time of 3:32.43, closely followed by Timothy Cheruiyot at 3:32.67, marking a season’s best for him. Reynold Cheruiyot completed the Kenyan sweep by finishing third.

Timothy Cheruiyot, on a comeback trail after injuries, shared his satisfaction with his performance and is eager to improve further as the Olympics approach.

In the women’s 1500m, Nelly Chepchirchir of Kenya claimed third place with a time of 4:01.19, her best for the season, in a race won by Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu. Susan Lokayo, another Kenyan, finished eighth.

The men’s steeplechase saw Abraham Kibiwott of Kenya take second place with a time of 8:07.38, narrowly missing the top spot to Ethiopia’s Firewu Samuel, who set a world-leading and personal best time of 8:07.25. Amos Serem and Benjamin Kigen also put forth strong efforts, finishing fourth and eleventh, respectively.

In the men’s javelin throw, Julius Yego of Kenya faced a setback in his Olympic bid, finishing eighth with a throw of 78.37m. The event was won by Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic with an impressive throw of 88.38m, while India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra secured second place with a throw just 2cm shy of Vadlejch’s mark. The athletes are now gearing up for the rest of the season, with their sights set on the upcoming Olympic Games.
