Kenya’s Chepngetich Triumphs in 10,000m, Securing Kenya’s Sixth Gold in Accra

Janeth Chepng’etich secured another gold for Kenya at the African Games in Accra, Ghana, triumphing in the women’s 10,000m event on Thursday evening.

Chepng’etich completed the race in 33:37.00, outpacing Ethiopian competitors Belew Kefale (33:38.37) and Amare Tekan Berhe (33:51.50), who claimed second and third place respectively.

Throughout the 25-lap race, Chepng’etich engaged in a back-and-forth battle for the lead with Kefale, ultimately showcasing a remarkable kick in the final lap to secure victory.

Her gold medal marks Kenya’s sixth at the quadrennial event, contributing to the country’s total tally of 22 medals.

In addition to Chepng’etich’s triumph, Angella Okutoyi also clinched gold in the women’s tennis singles and silver in the doubles. Meanwhile, the national rugby 7s team secured a silver medal after a close 21-14 loss to Uganda.

The men’s 400m hurdles final saw Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Wiseman Were narrowly miss out on a podium finish, clocking 50.10 to secure fourth place.

The race was won by Moroccan Saad Hinti, who set a national record with a time of 48.82. Botswana’s Bonnye Victor and Tisang Kemorena secured second and third place respectively.

As the competition enters its penultimate day on Friday, Kenya anticipates further opportunities to add to its medal haul, with events including the men and women’s half marathon, men’s javelin throw, men’s high jump, men and women’s 1500m, men’s 5000m, and men and women’s 4x400m relay.
