Kenya’s under-20 rugby team, affectionately known as Chipu, is gearing up for their next challenge in the Rugby Africa Barthes Trophy, aiming to secure a consecutive victory following their initial triumph over Namibia. Head Coach Simon Jawichre has rallied his squad to maintain their momentum and refine their strategy as they prepare to face Tunisia on Wednesday.

In a recent statement, Jawichre emphasized the importance of mental preparedness and tactical precision, stating, “We’re honing in on our game plan’s finer points while keeping our team’s spirit high for the upcoming match against Tunisia.”

Chipu showcased their resilience in their opener, holding off a determined comeback from Namibia to clinch a narrow 38-34 win. Despite this being their first match of the year without any prior friendlies, the team’s positive attitude and confidence shone through.

The Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy serves as the continent’s premier under-20 championship, with the victor earning the honor to represent Africa at the World Rugby U20 Trophy, scheduled to take place in Scotland from July 2-17.

The 2024 edition of the Barthes Trophy features a competitive lineup, including host nation Zimbabwe, the defending champions, alongside Kenya, Tunisia, and Namibia.

The tournament operates on a round-robin format, with the team amassing the most points over three rounds crowned as the champion. Kenya’s Chipu is poised to continue their quest for glory, with hopes of emerging as the top team in African under-20 rugby.
