Kenya’s under-20 rugby squad, Chipu, staged a remarkable comeback to clinch the Under 20 Barthes Cup Trophy, overcoming an early 10-0 deficit to defeat Zimbabwe 28-13 in a riveting match in Harare.
The game began with Zimbabwe’s Junior Sables quickly taking a 10-0 lead, putting Chipu on the back foot. However, the tide turned as Iddo Kuta, Michael Wamalwa, and Patrick Wainaina crossed the try line, giving Kenya a 17-10 lead at halftime.
In the second half, James Olela of Kabras Sugar widened the gap with a penalty goal, only for Zimbabwe to respond with a penalty of their own. But Kenya’s resolve shone through as Andycole Omollo of KCB scored a try, and Philip Okeyo added another penalty goal, sealing the victory.
This win not only earned Kenya a spot in the World Rugby Under 20 Trophy in Scotland but also served as redemption for last year’s loss to Zimbabwe, signaling a promising future for Kenyan rugby.
