Kenya’s U-23 squad, the Emerging Stars, launched their journey in the 2024 COSAFA Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Zambia, thanks to first-half strikes from Patrick Otieno and Austin Odhiambo at Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.

The team’s dynamic start paid off, netting two goals within the first 18 minutes. Despite Zambia’s robust comeback attempt in the latter half, the Stars held their lead until the final whistle. Zambia’s challenge was further hampered when their captain, Kelvin Kapumbu, received his marching orders after a second caution, leaving his team short-handed.

This win propelled the Stars to the summit of Group C, edging out Zimbabwe on goal difference, who had secured a narrow 1-0 win against Comoros in the group’s earlier match.

The Stars wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Gor Mahia’s key player Odhiambo converting a penalty eight minutes in. The penalty was awarded when Otieno’s blistering pace earned him a foul inside the penalty area by Chitoshi Chinga, following a deft touch from Benson Omalla.

Continuing their offensive, the Stars doubled their advantage at the 18-minute mark through Otieno, who capitalized on a well-crafted play involving Austin and Omalla. Omalla’s precise low cross from the right flank found Otieno, who stealthily evaded his defender to slot in the second goal.

Zambia’s response involved an increased reliance on crosses and set-pieces, but they were unable to breach the Kenyan defense, anchored by the solid duo of Amos Wanjala and Sylvester Owino. Goalkeeper Bryne Omondi remained largely untested until a crucial save in the 67th minute, deflecting a curling effort from Zambian substitute Andrew Phiri.

Despite Zambia’s persistent efforts, Kenya’s disciplined defense stood firm, securing a clean sheet and a triumphant start to their campaign.
