Kenya’s Hellen Obiri Triumphs in New York Marathon, Tola Sets Course Record in Men’s Race
Hellen Obiri of Kenya emerged as the triumphant champion of the New York Marathon after an intense and closely contested women’s race on Sunday.
The Boston Marathon titleholder achieved a time of 2:27:23, narrowly overtaking Letesenbet Gidey, the world 10,000m silver medalist from Ethiopia, who finished with a time of 2:27:29.
Sharon Lokedi, the former defending champion from Kenya, secured the third position, clocking in at 2:27:33.
The women’s competition was fiercely competitive, with Obiri and Gidey leading a tightly packed group that included Lokedi and former world record holder Brigid Kosgei, around 3.2 kilometres from the finish.
This victory marked Obiri’s second win in the World Marathon Majors throughout her marathon career, following her previous triumph in Boston earlier this year.
In the men’s event, Ethiopian athlete Tamirat Tola claimed the top spot, setting a course record of 2:04:59. Kenya’s Albert Korir, the 2021 champion, secured second place with a time of 2:06:57, while another Ethiopian, Shura Kitata, completed the race in third place, finishing in 2:07:11.
