The Kenya Lionesses, under the guidance of Coach Paul Murunga, are set to compete in the upcoming Rugby Africa Women’s Cup, scheduled for May 4-12 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
Natasha Emali will lead the 28-member squad, which sees thirteen new faces since their last outing at the World Rugby WXV 3 competition in Dubai.
The team’s composition reflects strategic changes ahead of their participation in the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, taking place May 18-19 in Krakow, Poland. The return of seasoned player Linet Moraa, alongside Hesla Khisa and Diana Awino, adds depth and experience to the squad.
Additionally, newcomers Jane Chanya, Sheila Wesa, Mitchelle Atieno, Mitchelle Alivitsa, Refa Ochando, Hellen Achieng, Elizabeth Wekesa, Nolin Khaleyi, Carol Nyamwamu, and Hellen Anyango have received their first call-ups, signaling a fresh infusion of talent.
At the team announcement, Coach Murunga expressed confidence in the Lionesses’ readiness and highlighted the significance of the tournament as a pathway to World Cup qualification and the WXV 2 and WXV 3 competitions. “The squad is a blend of continuity and new prospects, featuring players who have proven their mettle in last year’s edition,” said Murunga.
The 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup will adopt a round-robin format, with the Lionesses pitted against the reigning champions South Africa, host nation Madagascar, and Cameroon. The Kenyan team is poised to make a strong statement on the field, aiming to secure their spot in the World Cup.
