Kenya’s Africa 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala’s win at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix is upheld, but his 9.78-second time will not be ratified as a world lead, as it was wind assisted at +2.3m/s.
Omanyala won the race by stepping on the right side outside his lane, glancing at Leslie Tebogo, who finished second with a wind-assisted 9.91.
USA’s Kenny Bednarek finished third in 10.02. The confusion surrounding Omanyala’s win was cleared up when World Athletics exonerated him under rule 17.3.1, stating that he had not infringed on Tebogo.
Omanyala later anchored the national 4x100m team to victory, clocking 38.26 seconds and enhancing their chances of qualifying for the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, scheduled for August 19th-27th, 2023.
The top 16 teams and the top 8 finishers from the previous year’s World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA, will participate.
