Kenya’s Alicia Owegi fought valiantly but succumbed to Slovakia’s Viktoria Morvayova, losing 2-6, 2-6 at the ITF Women’s World Tour W25 tournament at the Karen Country Club.

Owegi, a wildcard entry, faced a tough challenge against the experienced Slovak, who secured victory in the thrilling round of 32 encounter.

Meanwhile, Stacey Yego advanced to the next round with a walkover, and Burundi’s Sada Nahimana secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lucie Tan Nguyen.

In another match, Tanzania’s Martin Shana Mao fell to Italy’s Gaia Squarcialupi 4-6, 0-6. The tournament provides players with a chance to earn ITF and WTA ranking points, crucial for their transition into the professional ranks of tennis.

Tournament director Martha Tirop highlighted the event as an entry point to professional tennis, offering players a valuable experience at the top level. The competition, featuring 64 players from 32 countries, serves as a significant opportunity for aspiring talents.
