Kenya’s Alicia Owegi fought valiantly but succumbed to Slovakia’s Viktoria Morvayova, losing 2-6, 2-6 at the ITF Women’s World Tour W25 tournament at the Karen Country Club.
Owegi, a wildcard entry, faced a tough challenge against the experienced Slovak, who secured victory in the thrilling round of 32 encounter.
Meanwhile, Stacey Yego advanced to the next round with a walkover, and Burundi’s Sada Nahimana secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lucie Tan Nguyen.
In another match, Tanzania’s Martin Shana Mao fell to Italy’s Gaia Squarcialupi 4-6, 0-6. The tournament provides players with a chance to earn ITF and WTA ranking points, crucial for their transition into the professional ranks of tennis.
