Kenya’s Junior Stars showcased their dominance in the CECAFA Under-18 Championship group phase, securing a flawless record by rallying from a goal down to overpower Somalia 4-1 at a packed Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
Somalia took an early lead with Abdihafid Abdi’s goal in the 19th minute. However, a remarkable comeback unfolded as Humphrey Aroko’s brace, along with goals from Stanley Wilson and Aldrine Kibet, secured a resounding victory for Kenya, securing nine points in the group.
Already having secured a spot in the semi-finals with a 1-0 win against Rwanda in their previous match, Head Coach Salim Babu made eight changes to the lineup, providing starting opportunities to other players. Babu praised the team’s performance and expressed determination to advance to the final.
“We want to go all the way. It doesn’t matter who we meet in the semis, but our ambition is to take each match on and fight for a win,” said Coach Babu.
Junior Stars responded with Aroko’s curling effort and Wilson’s free-kick bouncing off the bar and into the net. Kenya led 2-1 at halftime, reflecting their dominance in the latter part of the first half.
In the second half, Coach Babu made strategic changes, introducing crowd favorite Kibet, who swiftly contributed to the team’s success. Kibet’s skillful play set up Aroko for the third goal, and Aroko completed his hattrick with another superb solo effort.
With the group stage triumph, Kenya Junior Stars will face the second-placed team from Group B in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Rwanda secured the second semi-final slot from Group A by defeating Sudan 3-0.
