Kenya’s table tennis squad for the upcoming 2023 African Games, scheduled from March 8 to 23 in Accra, Ghana, has been finalized. The team comprises 18 athletes, both seasoned players and rising talents, selected after rigorous national trials held at Kenyatta University and Oshwal Sports Complex in Nairobi.

Following these trials, which showcased the skills of both male and female players, as well as junior talents, a provisional team of 9 men and 9 women was confirmed. According to Fahd Daim, Secretary General of the Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA), the team includes a mix of experienced players and promising juniors, fulfilling the requirement set by the Sports Ministry to include at least one junior player in each category.

Among the notable junior additions are Abdul Anab, 11, and Sifa Nafula, 9, who impressed during the trials and will join their senior counterparts in the men’s and women’s teams respectively.

The senior trials saw Lisa Wele of the University of Nairobi and Brian Mutua of JKUAT emerge as top performers, securing their places in the national team. However, some experienced players like Mary Kinuthia missed out on the final selection.

Emmanuel Wanjala, a rising star from St. Joseph’s Form Three, made a remarkable debut in the trials, finishing fourth in the national rankings. Despite his relative inexperience, Wanjala displayed great potential, defeating seasoned players and earning recognition for his talent.

Doreen Juma, making a comeback after a hiatus, showcased her skills and ranked second in the women’s qualifiers, reflecting her determination and passion for the sport.

Reflecting on his unexpected success, Wanjala expressed gratitude for the opportunity and newfound confidence in his abilities, while Juma emphasized her joy at returning to competitive play after a break.

In intense matches during the trials, players like Doreen Juma, Lisa Wele, and Emmanuel Wanjala demonstrated their prowess, securing victories and solidifying their positions in the provisional team.

Brian Mutua, who recently completed a high-performance training stint in Denmark, expressed his aspirations of representing Kenya in the Paris Olympics, with the African Games serving as a crucial qualifier for the event.

As Kenya prepares to compete in various sports at the African Games, including badminton, cycling, swimming, tennis, triathlon, and wrestling, the table tennis team is ready to showcase their skills and vie for Olympic qualification.

The finalized team roster includes seasoned players like Brian Mutua and Lisa Wele, alongside promising talents such as Emmanuel Wanjala and Sifa Nafula, highlighting Kenya’s diverse and talented table tennis contingent.
