Kevin De Bruyne Makes Triumphant Return as Man City Cruise in FA Cup Third Round
Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne marked his long-awaited comeback for Manchester City in style as the FA Cup holders secured a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Huddersfield in the third round on Sunday.
De Bruyne, who had been sidelined since August with a hamstring injury sustained during City’s Premier League opener against Burnley, made his return as a 57th-minute substitute at the Etihad Stadium. The crowd erupted in chants of ‘Oh Kevin De Bruyne’ as the 32-year-old stepped onto the field, replacing Julian Alvarez.
Pep Guardiola’s side had already taken the lead with goals from Phil Foden and Alvarez when De Bruyne entered the game. His presence seemed to ignite City’s attack further, contributing to three more goals scored by Ben Jackson’s own goal, another Foden effort, and a Jeremy Doku strike.
Doku’s goal, a result of a delicate lofted pass from De Bruyne, capped the demolition of Huddersfield.
City, who have managed without De Bruyne’s services, will undoubtedly benefit from his world-class quality in midfield as they aim to compete for the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
The victory over Huddersfield marks City’s initial step on the road to Wembley, and their ambitions for more silverware in the new year seem well within reach.
In other FA Cup third-round matches, Premier League side Luton Town was held to a goalless draw by third-tier Bolton, while Nottingham Forest came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Blackpool. West Ham, facing second-tier Bristol City, settled for a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium.
The highlight of the day sees Premier League heavyweights Arsenal and Liverpool clashing at the Emirates Stadium, renewing their rivalry in the quest for FA Cup success. After a 1-1 draw in their previous league encounter, both teams are eager to secure a psychological advantage in this highly anticipated tie.
