The national men’s and women’s squads for the upcoming ‘African Hockey Road to 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers have been meticulously trimmed down to 25 players each after a rigorous four-month selection process spanning Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Kakamega.

In the men’s category, the team composition consists of five forwards, nine midfielders, eight defenders, and three goalkeepers. Conversely, the women’s squad is structured with seven forwards, seven midfielders, eight defenders, and three goalkeepers.

These players are presently engaged in intensive preparations for the pivotal qualifiers, slated to transpire in Pretoria, South Africa, from October 29 to November 5.

As part of their preparations, both teams are on a non-residential training camp, awaiting government authorization to transition into a residential camp for more concentrated and focused readiness.

Subsequent to this phase, the teams will undergo further scrutiny, ultimately culminating in the selection of the final 18 players in each category.

The men’s team will be under the leadership of Fidhelis Kimanzi as the head coach, supported by assistant head coach Micheal Malungu. In the women’s team, Meshak Senge will assume the role of head coach, with Rose Mbulo serving as his assistant.

Senge underscores the importance of player commitment and a positive attitude as they proceed with the selection process.

“We aim to elevate the team to a higher level through comprehensive planning and selecting the final 18 players based on build-up matches. We expect unwavering commitment, strong desire, and dedication from the players we choose,” Senge emphasized.

“Given that this will be a new team with different players from last year, we will take what works structurally, and build on the negatives so that we are ready for the tournament,” he added. The tournament’s inaugural matches will witness the men’s team squaring off against Egypt, while the women’s team will engage Zambia.

The medical team will be led by Carole Okoth, with Rebecca Kaumba and Micheal Mwanyamba serving as physiotherapists for the teams.
