Kipsang, Chebet Shines with Double Victory at National Police Athletics Championships

Abel Kipsang showcased his exceptional talent and endurance by claiming a double victory in the men’s 800m and 1500m races at the 11th edition of the National Police Service Athletics Championships, which concluded on Thursday at the Kasarani Stadium.

In the competitive 1500m race, Kipsang displayed remarkable speed and strategy, clocking an impressive time of three minutes, 36.84 seconds to secure first place.

Former world champion Elijah Manangoi put up a strong performance, finishing second with a time of 3:38.50.

Continuing his outstanding form, Kipsang dominated the 800m race, crossing the finish line in one minute, 48.14 seconds. William Rayan pushed hard but settled for second place with a time of 1:48.26, while Jeremiah Mutai secured the third spot with a time of 1:49.80.

Reflecting on his victories, Kipsang expressed his satisfaction, stating, “The race was tough since everyone wanted victory for their regions. I am happy about the victory, and my target is to continue improving ahead of the World Championships. My goal this year is to make it to the podium.”

In the women’s 1500m, Commonwealth Games 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet showcased her prowess by clocking an impressive time of four minutes, 07.18 seconds, securing a well-deserved first place.

Brenda Chebet displayed great determination and claimed second place with a time of 4:09.18, while Caroline Nyaga settled for third place with a time of 4:11.66.

Chebet expressed her satisfaction with her performance, stating, “It was my first time competing over 1500m, and I am happy I achieved my target, which was to test my speed in this championship. I am preparing to compete at the Oslo Diamond League, and this was part of my training. I am happy with my form, and my goal is to maintain it and remain healthy ahead of the World Championships.”

Other notable performances included Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu’s dominant display in the men’s 5000m, and Commonwealth 800m champion Mary Moraa’s victory in the women’s 400m race.

Additionally, Purity Kirui, the 2014 Commonwealth Games 3000m steeplechase champion, exhibited her skill and determination in the women’s event, claiming victory with a time of 9:50.39.

The two-day event served as a platform for selecting a team that will represent the police force at the upcoming national championships, which will be held in a fortnight.

These championships are crucial in determining the country’s best athletes who will go on to represent Kenya at the highest level of international competitions, including the World Championships.
