The upcoming Chicago Marathon, set for October 8, will witness the presence of renowned athletes Kelvin Kiptum and Ruth Chepngetich as the headliners of this prestigious event.

Kelvin Kiptum, a London Marathon champion, is preparing for his third marathon appearance with a strong determination to dethrone the defending champion, Benson Kipruto, also from Kenya, who is seeking his second consecutive title in Chicago.

The 23-year-old Kiptum has gained significant attention, with some even comparing him to the marathon world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge. He marked an exceptional debut in the 42km race last December, setting a remarkable record of 2:01:53 and becoming the world’s fourth-fastest marathoner at the Valencia Marathon.

In April’s London Marathon, he elevated his status as the second-fastest marathoner globally with a time of 2:01:25.

Kiptum’s excitement for the upcoming Chicago Marathon is undeniable, but he is well aware of the challenge posed by Kipruto, who has the extra motivation of claiming the Mr. Chicago Marathon title with a back-to-back win.

Last year, Kipruto achieved an impressive time of 2:04:24, ranking as the fourth-fastest in the history of the World Marathon Majors race.

The Kenyan duo will also be on the lookout for strong competition from Ethiopian runner Seifu Tura, the 2021 champion, who aims to make amends for his second-place finish last year.

In the women’s category, Ruth Chepngetich, a two-time Chicago Marathon champion and the 2019 World Marathon titleholder, is returning to defend her crown.

However, her quest for a third consecutive victory will not be easy, as elite athletes like London Marathon champion Sifan Hassan, with her remarkable debut time of 2:18:33, and 2021 Boston Marathon champion Joycelline Jepkosgei, seek to challenge her reign.

This year’s Chicago Marathon, the 45th edition, will witness the debut of Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba, adding further excitement to the event and offering a chance to emulate Sifan Hassan’s success in the United States.

As the date approaches, athletes and fans alike eagerly anticipate the exhilarating battles that will unfold at the Chicago Marathon, as these world-class runners vie for glory on the challenging course.
