Faith Kipyegon’s pursuit of a double victory at the World Athletics Championships is making progress as she secured her spot in the women’s 5000m final on Wednesday evening.
Merely a day after clinching gold in the women’s 1500m, Kipyegon engaged in a renewed rivalry with Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands during the second semi-final of the 5000m event.
In a closely contested finish, the world record holder secured the second position with a time of 14:32.31, closely tailing Hassan who completed the race in 14:32.29. Another Kenyan contender, Lilian Kasait, secured the fifth position but also successfully qualified for the final round.
In a separate semi-final matchup, Beatrice Chebet, the Commonwealth Games champion, triumphed with a time of 14:57.70. She outpaced defending champion Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia, who finished second in 14:57.72. Margaret Chelimo secured third place in 15:00.10, thereby securing her place in the final as well.
The women’s 5000m final is scheduled for Saturday. Kenya’s pursuit of additional medals at the championship continues with the men’s 1500m final set for later tonight at 10.15 pm.
Abel Kipsang and Reynold Cheruiyot will be representing Kenya in the final race.
