Faith Kipyegon, the double Olympic 1500m champion, showcased her exceptional form once again with a commanding performance in the women’s 5000m at the World Championships trials held at Nyayo Stadium.
This marked her first competition since breaking both the 1500m and 5000m world records within just one week.
The two-time world champion demonstrated her dominance in the 12-and-a-half-lap race, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 14 minutes and 53.90 seconds, securing the top spot.
National champion Lilian Kasait followed closely behind, securing second place with a time of 14:56.50. Margaret Chelimo, the World 10,000m bronze medallist, clinched the third spot with a time of 15:07.49, securing her place in the upcoming World Championships.
Looking ahead, Kipyegon, who will be aiming for her third world title in the 1500m, confirmed her intention to compete in both the 1500m and 5000m events in Budapest.
Expressing her satisfaction with the race, Kipyegon stated, “I am happy I have won today’s race in the 5000m. My main focus is to defend my 1500m title in Budapest, but I also want to challenge myself in the 5000m race as I continue to push my limits. Success comes through hard work, and I am confident that I will perform well in Budapest.”
