Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon smashed the women’s 1500m world record at the Florence Diamond League on Friday night in a sensational display of athletic prowess.
Crossing the finish line in an astonishing time of 3 minutes and 49.11 seconds, Kipyegon left her competitors in awe.
The 29-year-old double Olympic and world champion obliterated the previous world record mark of 3:50.07 set by Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba in Monaco back in 2015. Kipyegon’s remarkable feat solidifies her status as one of the greatest women in the discipline, with an impressive collection of two world titles and two Olympic gold medals.
Expressing her elation, Kipyegon shared her surprise and gratitude, saying, “I’m so excited, so happy, I didn’t expect this. I was expecting a world lead, not a world record, but I’m so grateful.” She emphasized that she believed in the power of possibilities, stating, “As I said today and yesterday, everything is possible.”
During the race in Tuscany, Kipyegon left the field behind, finishing more than 12 seconds ahead of reigning European champion Laura Muir and Australia’s Jessica Hull.
Her dominant performance showcased her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft.
With this remarkable achievement, Kipyegon has etched her name in the annals of track and field history, further solidifying Kenya’s reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance running.
