Kisii University and Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST) showcased their sporting prowess at the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Western Conference games.
During the two-day championship held at Great Lakes University of Kenya (GLUK) and Maseno University, Kisii University excelled in various disciplines.
They secured victory in rugby 7’s, men’s scrabble, and men’s cross country. In the thrilling rugby sevens final, Kisii University narrowly defeated hosts Maseno University with a score of 5-0, successfully defending their title. Dennish Omondi, an alumnus of Kabianga High School, scored an unconverted try that secured Kisii’s deserved victory.
In the semifinals, Kisii overcame Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) 17-7, while Maseno University triumphed over Tom Mboya with a score of 28-7. In the playoff for third place, JOOUST emerged victorious against Tom Mboya with a score of 17-0.
Meanwhile, MMUST showcased their dominance by clinching titles in ultimate Frisbee, mixed relay, and chess. They secured the ultimate Frisbee title with 39 points, followed by Kaimosi Friends University with 34 points, and Maseno University finished third with 21 points. MMUST also triumphed in the cross-country mixed relay, with Kabianga University and Rongo University securing second and third place, respectively.
In the women’s 10km race, Kibabi University emerged victorious with 32 points, while MMUST finished second with 35 points, the same as Kaimosi Friends University. In the men’s 10km race, Kisii, led by captain Kevin Kimutai, defended their title successfully, winning the team title with 23 points.
MMUST secured second place with 33 points, and Kabianga University claimed third place with 57 points. Kimutai clocked an impressive time of 31:45.07, with David Kiprono (32:32.13) of Kabianga finishing second and Cornelius Kemboi (33:10.96) coming in third.
In the chess competition, MMUST triumphed in the women’s category with 21 points, outperforming Maseno University in second place with 18 points, while Rongo University secured third place with 13 points.
In the men’s category, MMUST edged out Kisii University, earning 27 points to Kisii’s 18 points, with JOOUST coming third with 17 points.
The competition will continue at Kibabii University in Bungoma on October 14 and 15, where the 10 participating universities will vie for titles in karate, taekwondo, table tennis, lawn tennis, and badminton.
